Stop the Growth in Government

Democrat John Greene Says If Elected This November
He Will Stop the Growth in Government

Reported By: Pete Norris, TKL News Bureau Chief

The winner of the Democratic primary for the 2nd U.S. Congressional District says that he is determined to undo the damage that has been done by decades of tax and spending increases. John Greene, who beat Bob Scott in

the primary elections held on August 5th, says that if elected he plans to put a stop to the runaway growth in the federal government.

"The growth in government has been the greatest tragedy in[all of] the twentieth century. There is a lot of people all over this country that are fed up with this growth in government."

Greene sounded confident about his chances this November. "If I can get my message out I can beat John[Jimmy] Duncan[in the general election], I really can."

He said that his message during the campaign would be simple - that he would tell the voting public that "If you

vote for me and make me your congressman I promise that I will vote 'no' to any and all legislation which in any way increases the size, cost, power, or extends the reach of the federal government.

Bills that do any of these things are destructive to liberty and freedom no matter how cleverly disguised they be[such as politicians saying things like] 'this is for the children' or 'you're mean if you won't increase the size of government'[in order for politicians to get spending increases that they want]."

Greene says that he does not want to hurt anyone who has come to depend on the federal government such as recipients of medicaid or social security. "What we want to do is cut out the increases in government every year and stop the growth. This year we would cut out all the increases that were put in last year. It took sixty years for the [federal]government to get this big and it may take sixty years to get it back down[to where it should be]."

Greene said that if elected he would be diligent in studying any bills or measures before voting on them in the congress.

He jokingly said that regarding his plan to stop the growth in government "That is what I am going to do. The only way that they can keep me from voting 'no'

is to kill me.

"The chairman of the Democratic Party of Knox County, Jim Gray, said that he thought that John Greene was helped financially by the supporters of incumbent 2nd Congressional District representative Jimmy Duncan, who is a Republican. "I suspect his[Greene's] 'candidacy' is a ploy by Duncan to milk more money from the lobbyists that fund his[Duncan's] perennial campaign."

The person that Greene beat in the August 5th primary, Bob Scott, said that that is not the case. Scott said that Greene beat him fair and square. Scott said that John Greene had ran against Duncan once before in the past and that Greene had received about twenty percent of the vote in the previous election.

Jim Gray confirmed that Greene had filed once before as a candidate for the 2nd Congressional District seat.

Greene said that he is thirty-six years old. "I work in a warehouse. I'm just an ordinary guy. I get up and go to work just like anybody else."

The 2nd U.S. Congressional District is comprised of parts or all of Blount, Knox, Loudon, McMinn, Monroe, and Sevier counties. Greene received 6,168 votes or 51.6% of the total vote compared to Scott's 5,783 votes or 48.4% of the total vote count in the Democratic primary.
