Month-long Spooktacular Thrills

by Ashley Murphy

It's that time of the year again. October. The official start to a spooktacular Fall season. Until the 31st, at least. Houses will begin to show all the signs of Halloween, bringing out the frightening decorations and yards will become cemeteries. The monsters and ghouls will be preparing for their annual venture out into the world of the living. But if you think you're missing out on all the fun and you want an encounter with the undead, then there are plenty of places to keep you...on your toes. And no worries, if you want to escape with the kiddies until things return to normal, there are safehavens for you, too! And these last all month long so you're sure not to miss any screams. Check them out below.

Rock City has a couple of frights you may be interested in. The first is geared more toward the youngsters, or those who are trying to find the evil lurking about. The Enchanted MAiZE is a calm, laid back family atmosphere. It has several activities for the kids to come and enjoy. Regular activities consist of a stroll through the "Coca-Cola" maze, hay rides, chomping on delicious funnel cakes and, of course, the corn cannons. The maze operates Every Thursday through Sunday in October through the 30th. Visit www.enchantedmaze.com
for hours of operation and ticket pricing.

Another event offered by Rock City isn't for the faint of heart. Located on a farm just across the Georgia line, is a forest that even the bravest are afraid to enter. The Forest of Fear is the "world's only outdoor 3D haunted house and is guaranteed to frighten all who enter. On the same location is the Ghost Ride. This adventure takes you on a hay ride through a battlefield where the dead don't stay under. Then navigate your way to safety once the wagon abandons you to hold your own. To calm down after a frightful journey, gather around a bonfire, listen to some ghost stories, grab some grub and enjoy the live music. This will take place every Friday and Saturday night in October. Visit blowingscreamsfarm.com
for hours of operation, tickets and specials.

Ruby Falls also has a haunted house that isn't for the weak or easily frightened. The Haunted Cavern at Ruby Falls was voted a #1 haunting spot for 2010. This decent to the grave takes you 26 stories underground. A run in with Barnabus Hale and his ruthless, degenerate side show family. Each member's story of becoming part of the side show is disturbing, however, what's even more frightening are the sadistic hobbies each person has.

One usually has the common sense to know to be leery of clanking chains, nerve clenching scrapes and agonizing screams, but in this terror, beware of the sweet smells of cookies and cotton candy and the sounds of happy games. These could very well lead you to your end. If you think you're brave enough to take the plunge, visit www.hauntedcavern.com
to learn more.

Going back to family fun, the Tennessee Valley Railroad can accommodate that. The Eerie Express is a train ride that will leave you with a hauntingly good time. This is not a haunted house and is very kid and family friendly. The ride will depart from Chattanooga and take you to the Fun House where storytelling, black light mini gold and an old time carnival fun house await you. Costumes are encouraged for the kids, as a costume contest will be held during the trip. If you get there early enough, a pumpkin patch and petting zoo can be visited before boarding. For train departure times every Friday and Saturday in October, starting on the 14th, and ticket prices, visit www.tvrail.com
.

Lake Winnie could also create another big family fun night with Lake WinnepeSPOOKah. This event will be held every Friday and Saturday, October 7-29th from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. Such entertainment will include haunted rides, eerie sights, wonderful treats and even a character or two. Parades will be held throughout the evening, including a costume parade, so it's encouraged for everyone to wear their costumes! But the fun doesn't end there; magic shows and dancing will insure that no one is left out of the Halloween festivities. Tickets are $24 per person and can be bought at the gate or at www.lakewinnie.com
.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Halloween and enjoy all of the festivities! Maybe the crowds won't be a terrible nightmare. Unless you keep asking yourself what might be lurking within...
