"Local resident Tina Rice, whose son is serving in Iraq, is on a mission to see not one of our soldiers is left empty handed at Christmas time. She has started "Operation Christmas Presence" to make sure each of our local soldiers gets a gift box for Christmas."

by Joe Kirkpatrick

Christmas is a special time of year for most of us. If you happen to be away from  your family and home in another country during Christmas, it can be one of the most miserable times of the year instead of the most special time. We have many men and women from our area who will be spending their Christmas this year in Iraq serving their country. Many, no doubt, will receive packages from their families, but there are some who, unfortunately, will not.

Local resident Tina Rice, whose son is serving in Iraq, is on a mission to see not one of our soldiers is left empty handed at Christmas time. She has started "Operation Christmas Presence" to make sure each of our local soldiers gets a gift box for Christmas. She is working closely with Kaylee Radsyminski, a local young lady who has already founded "Tunes 4 the Troops", a service which provides thousands of CD's for our soldiers, to find out the needs and where to send the packages.

Mt. Olive Ministries is already supplying the packaging supplies and volunteers to pack and ship the packages, and Southern Heritage Bank has

donated the funds to ship the first 100 packages which cost $8.10 each to mail, and Southeast Bank & Trust, located in Cooke's Plaza on Keith Street, has donated $400. By the way, can you believe the US Postal Service does not offer free shipping for a program such as this? I've already called Congressman Zack Wamp's office and informed them of this, and hope you will call also. Congressman Wamp's number is 756-2342.

What needs to be donated? When Tina first started this program, she had hoped to get enough donations to fill 100 boxes. Response has been far greater than expected. A monetary donation is great at this point, since goods to fill over 400 boxes have been donated! As I stated before, Southern Heritage and South East Bank & Trust have already donated funds to mail the first 150 boxes, so funds are really needed to fund postage for the remaining 250 plus boxes. Wouldn't it be great if some of the other banks in town would match the generosity of Southern Heritage? Monetary donations can be mailed to:

Mt. Olive Church of God,
3522 Harrison Pike,
Cleveland, TN 37311.

Please designate on your check "Operation Christmas Presence" so this program will receive your donation. I might add, all donations are 100% tax exempt as well.
