Waco - The new history.
As soon as the word "conspiracy is mentioned most readers lose faith in the reliability of the editorial. It is a popular misconception that all conspiracy theories are concocted by weird kooks looking for coincidental associations to manufacture controversy. While there is some truth in that assumption, it is the past reporting of genuine conspiracies that has shaken America and been responsible for any trust the public still have in the news media. Watergate is a good example. Recent scandals involving illegal activities by managers of the IRS, VA medical care, NSA spying on Americans are just a few examples of bureaucrats conspiring to break the law, which proves conspiracies do exist more often than not in the political and power broker world, especially in the attempted cover-ups that result when news leaks out.
Have you noticed how government will close ranks and lie to the American people whenever wrongdoing is proved? They do conspire to keep the public from knowing the truth. All the time.
History itself is not immune from individuals conspiring to change the record of events they don't like either.
It is no longer unusual for print and television to relay historical events in a way that is contrary to actual reports from the past. It seems that no period or event in history is sacred. Cable channels, especially the History and Discovery type channels seem to be the worst culprits for rewriting history to reflect a view of the world that fits modern perceptions, but are not true to the historical record. The life of Jesus now bears little resemblance to the stories I remember as a child. Darwin's theory of evolution has now become fact. The warnings of possible man induced global warming is now science fact called climate change, and socialism, long been viewed as a political disaster, is now seen as the answer to civilization's ills. Even the way we have traditionally dated historical events as BC and AD is being changed by these channels. The young, who have no memory of how historical events were reported at the time, look to modern information streams for the truth, but are being hoodwinked by the "new history". And I believe there are people out there that are conspiring to change history for political reasons.
I was watching a so-called documentary about the US government's 1993 raid on the Branch Davidians property in Waco, Texas, in which 76 men, women and children died.
At the time it was viewed as a disaster for all the government agencies and personnel involved, and despite no blame being attached or accountability made, the public in general became more horrified at what our government had done to its own people as more facts became known. The FBI, ATF, Tactical response teams and Hostage negotiators all suffered a blow to their reputations and public trust that has never been regained. In this later depiction of the historical event the young viewer could be forgiven for believing government agents involved in the 51 day standoff were in fact the victims trying desperately to save those who died in the horrifying fire that started as government agents drove military tanks into the wood framed building. Against direct orders from the US Attorney General not to, the agents released pyrotechnic gas canisters into the building. Most of the women and children died sheltering from the fire in an inner concrete block room and could not have escaped if they had tried. The reckless action was definitely not an attempt to save lives. It was almost an insult to the dead when one negotiator cried on camera that he was unable to save the children, although no attempt was made to save them. I was personally sickened at the spectacle, and the program.
I often wonder how many of those involved in the raid high-fived each other as the building burned. It was not a good day in the history of the United States.
After watching "Inside Waco" I did a quick Google search to learn more about the production and unearthed some startling facts that were downplayed in the aftermath of the tragedy. The Waco Tribune Herald was formulating a six part expose' of what they labeled a cult and seemed to be determined to smear Branch Davidians leader David Koresh, as a religious tyrant who was abusing children and planning terrorist acts using illegal firearms. They had got their information from two people who disliked Koresh but had no proof of actual wrongdoing. Those same people had also contacted the authorities and the FBI set up a five month surveillance of the Davidians during which no proof was found. A search warrant was eventually issued to look for illegal firearms which caused the standoff. The FBI had been in negotiations with the Tribune Herald to try to avoid tipping off Koresh of the raid through the story to be published. Tribune reporters were with the FBI when the standoff started and one reporter inadvertently ruined the element of surprise for the raid. Because of this setback the SWAT team ordered to serve the warrant, tried to make a forced entry which went terribly wrong. The Branch Davidians called 911 saying they were being shot at. The rest was history until the making of "Inside Waco" made some "new history".
Here is where a conspiracy is most likely. The program "Inside Waco" that attempted to reallocate blame for the botched raid was commissioned by Discovery Communications and was made by a British company to make it appear less biased. Discovery Communications owns a number of cable channels including channels that have aired the program. Discovery Communications is connected to Cox Enterprises who was connected to the Waco Tribune Herald.
The conspiracy could be to try to whitewash history to gradually remove the public's negative perception of the Tribune Herald's involvement in the botched Davidians raid. Government agencies involved in the program would also be happy for their historical image to be repaired. Also, channels like Discovery, History, Military- AHC, and Science rely heavily on government cooperation to compile their programs which places media corporations like Discovery Communications in bed with the government they are supposed to keep honest.
This is just one simple example of how cable channels can slowly change the perception of history while being secretly associated with the mainstream media and government.
Operating with these associations means none of our history is safe, especially when the "new history" electronic media is entirely replacing books written contemporary with historical events.
Conspiracy or not, this can not be good for history, or America.
That's what I think.
