What did you think?
Result of a year's surveys reveal what you think.

by Pete Edwards

With the welcoming of a new year it is traditional to look back at some memorable

happenings of the previous months. The People News will reflect these happenings buy analyzing the monthly surveys posted on the publication's website www.thepeoplenews.com.

Each month, in order to better gauge reader sentiment,  the online version of the paper asks a survey question of those visiting the site. The survey seeks input, usually regarding the front page story and local issues to help provide insight and help understand the public's point of view.

Early in 2004, emotions were high when Tim Gobble was forced to resign his Cleveland City Council seat or lose his job with the U.S. Secret Service because he was

critical of then Cleveland Police Chief, Lee Reese. The online survey showed  4 out of 5 respondents favored a federal investigation into what happened. The same number also wanted a congressional inquiry into Tennessee election practices which have since been plagued by accusations of election fraud.

In July of 2004 the survey showed that 3 out of 4 respondents favored housing county prisoners in a tent compound and requiring them to work to help pay for their keep.

Two out of three respondents supported the right of communities to display The Ten Commandments in  public buildings and the same number were in favor of back-peddling local government spending by the amount it had increased in previous years. A like number were in favor of increased investigation and stiffer penalties for officials who refused to release pubic information as required by law.

Even though the surveys were not formulated and monitored scientifically, and it would have been possible for a special interest group to slant the results, they do seem to reflect the general sentiment of replies to official surveys conducted locally. The People News will continue to post surveys on its website monthly during 2005. You can have your say by visiting:

The wording and results of each month's survey for 2004 are listed below.
