One Ring to Rule Them All

by Jennifer Bowman

I generally don't discuss events that are very personal in my life, but occasionally, thanks to the grace of God, good things do happen to me that I find important enough to share with the general public. I, Jennifer Christine Bowman, am engaged. Yes, to be married. There could be several reactions to this: one being "Well, duh, finally," if you know my fiancé and me personally - we are basically attached at the hip. You could say, "Wow, oh my gosh, I'm so excited for you!" for those who don't know, or you might tread your foot in the ground, shuffle them a bit, and stutter out these daring words: "Are you sure you're uh, ready for that?"

I find it completely humorous that people are convinced that I've never once thought the fact that I'll be poor, and that I'm "so young." No kidding. I'm quite aware of that, thanks. I sheepishly grin as you label me naïve, or sigh to myself as you judge me for not waiting until I'm done with college. As if in this day and age, one has to choose between a marriage and an education. This is not the 1950s. Yuppies cannot wrap their minds around the fact that people are capable of forming healthy, marriage-worthy relationships at a young age. It's sad, because my fiancé, the amazing Hoyt Daniel Martin (he goes by Daniel) is completely perfect in every way, at least to me.

I think that God must have had me in mind when my parents seemingly hasty decision to move to Cleveland had us leave on my eighteenth birthday. I was able to cut off ties with a previous relationship and by August 1st, had managed to score a Cleveland native with a good family and a Christian upbringing. If I

had merely attended Lee University, I might not have ever met Daniel. I might be dating *gasp* an out-of-towner or I might possibly be SINGLE!

Daniel, from a lack of a better phrase, completes me. Where I am passionate, he is patient. Where I am rash, he is reasonable. Where my temper boils, his calm nature subsides. I find something that matches us together nearly every single day. And the best part is that both of our families are so happy for us. If you knew us intimately, you'd know how perfect we really are for each other.

So I'd like to thank you all, personally, for your support. My wedding is going to be on August 8th, 2008. What is the significance of 08/08/08? For one thing, an eight on its side is infinity. Both of our parents have remained married to each other and have given us an example of a healthy, loving marriage. We realize that it is not merely a fun thing to do in order to send your parents into bankruptcy. It is forever. And eight is also the number of new beginnings. We are going to begin a life together, as one. Jennifer Christine Martin will be my new nomenclature. It looks kind of odd to type it out, but it sends my heart into a joyous new world.

Also, I'd like to ask for your continued prayers. I will soon be in England for eleven weeks for the Semester in Europe program that Lee has over in Cambridge, and I have never been separated from my fiancé for more than two days since we began dating. I have never been away from my parents for this long. It's going to be exciting, but I'm going to be very homesick as well. Pray that I may be able to enjoy England without becoming too lonely, and that absence would make the heart grow fonder (if that's even possible.) Pray that Daniel and I enter into a union led by God and supported by the community. We will have a difficult time, but we are in love, and we know that God has led us to one another. Pray that our relationship continues to mature, even as I am thousands of miles away. I wish you and your family the happiest of holidays, and may God bless you.
