Ashley's Avenue

Bright Lights, Big City

by Ashley Murphy

I recently visited an amazing city. One full of historical buildings, neon lights, honky tonks, and great American country music. For those of you who haven't guessed, I'm talking about Nashville, Tennessee's capitol city. It was a great trip, but definitely not enough time to see and do everything that Nashville has to offer.

I highly recommend Nashville, not just because its the "home of country music" and its thriving nightlife, but also for its history and many historical landmarks.

The Friday night that we arrived, we decided to go downtown off Broadway, where all of the hottest 'honky tonks' are located. This area is sometimes called "The District" and one of the busiest spots in Nashville. The particular hot spot we visited was called The Stage, and after walking in, noticed why it was called such a name. There was a large stage at the front of the crowd that held bands playing everything from Dierks Bentley to Miranda Lambert to band originals. Those that enjoy this type of outing, be sure to take a stroll down Broadway and Printer's Alley, there will be plenty to see and many individuals and bands to listen to.

Saturday we decided to take things easy and visit the Opry Mills Mall. From the moment I walked in I knew I was in heaven.

This one story mall holds over 200 stores, specialty shops, and restaurants. There's even a stingray aquarium next to The Aquarium Restaurant where you can go in and feed the stingrays! But as an avid shopper, the thought of Off Broadway Shoes, Guess Factory Store, Saks 5th Off 5th Avenue, and a Lucky Brand Jeans store just topped off my day. If any of you are like me, I recommend going early, because its easy to spend 6 or 7 hours just walking around and looking at everything. Although, about 3 of those hours we spent at Dave and Buster's eating and playing arcade games. Well, adults need fun time too!

After eating at Hard Rock Cafe on Sunday we stopped at the replica of Fort Nashborough across the river from LP Field (home of the Tennessee Titans.) While not the actual fort, the reproduction of it is quite interesting. In each of the full-size log replicas stood various instruments, tools, and utensils that were used during this time period. Although very small and self-guided, it definitely is worth a stop if you are interested in history.

Now, what Nashville is most famous for is its music industry, mainly country, but Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and EMI all have offices in Nashville. This is also where the Grand Ole Opry originated in 1925 at the Ryman Auditorium, and Nashville was deemed "Music City USA." The Grand Ole Opry has since been moved to the Grand Ole Opry House and plays several shows to the public multiple times a week.

The city is also home to the Country Music Association (CMA) Music Festival, held in June, and the CMA Awards Show, held in November at the Grand Ole Opry. The CMA Music Festival is a four day festival that features hundreds of country artists that perform and hold meet and greets and autograph sessions. If ever given the chance to attend either of these, it would be a great experience.

Also, coming up in September, Nashville will also be holding the nine day long Tennessee State Fair on the State Fairgrounds. I'm already planning another trip back to Nashville for a little more downtown time and to visit the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. I have never been and would love to stay a couple of nights in this hotel. Many people have said that its an amazing place to visit and to stay.

If planning a trip to Nashville, a great site to visit is: www.visitmusiccity.com

They have several links for events, lodging, show tickets, online discounts, and vacation specials.
