Newton to resign effective November 1st 2005
Sunday August 28th saw the belated resignation of Tennessee State Representative Chris Newton. Caught up in a corruption scandal that is a disgrace to our democratic system. Mr. Newton attempted to put a spin on the successes of his six terms in office in an open letter to his constituents by listing his achievements and reaffirming his strength and resolve.
I have always liked Newton's personality. He is one of those people that are naturally likable, naturally humorous and naturally comfortable in politics. But it was somehow obvious he couldn't be trusted because of these natural traits. I am not going to give Mr. Newton space in this paper to try to justify his actions to the people he betrayed, I will leave that to less discriminating news outlets but I am going to vent my contempt for his actions, his tardy resignation and his failure to beg his supporters for forgiveness. By his actions after the indictment Newton revealed his real self. He was not worthy to serve the people of Bradley County. He was not worthy to be a republican and he was not worthy of our compassion. He needs to spend a few years in jail to contemplate what he has done but I doubt that he will change his ways.
