Correction

In last month's "What do you think" under the title -The power in education- it was suggested that Bradley county school principals were personally receiving a bonus for saving energy. That assumption was based on a report in the Cleveland Daily Banner that I misinterpreted. The bonus the principals receive is actually used within their school to help purchase unfunded supplies. My apologies to our  school principals for any confusion the editorial caused.
Sometimes I am such an idiot.

A con's con

So, the new state-of-the-art Bradley county justice center is not only an overpriced monstrosity that is experiencing the same problems as the old jail, it is now also becoming overcrowded and may be decertified if more staff are not hired. Well, well, well.
Bradley County Grand Jury Foreman Bruce Renner, who ordered a new jail built, Bradley County Sheriff Dan Gilley, who failed to maintain the old jail, and Bill (William) Varnell, who was the Chairman of the Law Enforcement Committee that recommended the construction are primarily responsible for getting us into this expensive mess. Will they step forward and humble themselves with an apology to the taxpayer and the officials they misled - not likely any time soon. But we may be in for a lot of buck passing, especially by Gilley and Varnell at election time. And what about Bruce Renner? Apparently he failed to perform his duties as a grand jury foreman which require the diligent investigation of why the old jail was in such bad shape. And Judge Carroll L. Ross, who appointed Renner must take a lions share of the blame too for not requiring Renner to fulfill his duties in a diligent manner. If they were being diligent then surely the new grand jury foreman should be investigating why the new jail is not up to par. Renner, Gilley, Varnell and Ross were instigational in the squandering of precious taxpayer dollars and should be held accountable with public disgrace. That's just my opinion.

Hate bait

Contrary to what the liberal media and judiciary are currently trying to persuade us, hate is a perfectly valid emotion. Propaganda aside, hate can be a perfectly justifiable driving force, just as envy, jealousy and rage can be. These emotions are only unhealthy if they are taken to extremes - just as love can be. It is OK to hate the idea of homosexuality just as it is OK to hate the French so long as you don't become obsessed with it. It is OK for Iraqis to hate Americans but it becomes obsessive if they try to behead us or blow us up. The same is true of any emotion. Emotions drive us in almost everything we do. Most of us use emotions in varying degrees to improve our lot in life, to protect our homes and families and to find and keep a mate. Hate is not a negative emotion, it is only negative if it becomes excessive. The next time someone tells you that hate is bad tell them they are a politically correct liberal idiot. Be prepared though, contrary to popular belief liberals have emotions too.

Who's beautiful?

I am insulted. Joanne Maskew, Executive Director of Bradley County Keep America Beautiful, has had the nerve to grade me and my county with her self serving report card. She gave me an A but said I need to do better. Who the heck does this woman think she is. She gives the impression Bradley County would become a cesspool of litter and garbage if her organization was not around. Let me judge Maskew's performance for a moment because she receives public funds to pay her salary. She has no boss, she comes and goes as she pleases and when she is given a real task that can be assessed by her efforts, she fails miserably and decides she doesn't like the game. Recycling. She failed at it yet instead of being fired and required to get a real job, she just handed it off to someone else. This county has trash. Every county has trash with or without Miss Joanne Maskew. It is bad enough I am paying for her do nothing job, but to be insulted goes too far. I will not reveal my report card for Miss Maskew because I do believe she has the message.

Scareport committee

I don't always agree with statements made by Bradley County Commissioner Matthew (Matt) Brown. Sometimes I wonder if we are from the same planet. But unlike many of this county's leaders, I do trust his integrity. He is a good man. Being the man he is, highlighted itself with a statement that took some of our less upright city leaders by surprise and shook them to their nasty self-serving cores. During a discussion on the feasibility of building a new airport Brown said, if non-local funding proved unavailable for a new airport, citing safety concerns, he would favor closing Hardwick Field. Bam, right between the eyes. Surprise, surprise, all of a sudden a joint venture between Cleveland and Bradley County governments was not such a great idea. If the new airport failed, the city/county airport authority would have control of Hardwick Field and there would be a possibility it would be closed if people like Brown were in charge. Wouldn't you give 10 bucks to have seen the panic in their eyes. It was just one small step for the ordinary man, but one giant leap for Matt Brown.
