March Madness!
No, I'm Not Talking About Basketball...

by Ashley Murphy

My favorite thing about March... the coming of Spring! March 20th will mark the first day of spring, and like so many, I can't wait. It's supposed to mean the coming of leafy trees, blooming flowers and warmer weather! I just hope the latter is true enough this year. Don't get me wrong, I love snow, but not when it dampens my ability to drive and confines me to my home. I get stir crazy! On top of all that... I absolutely freeze in any environment below 65 degrees! Honestly. I guess many people get the warm weather itch this time of year, so if you're traveling to the southern coast over the next couple of weeks... pick your destination wisely.

Pretty much no matter where you go, coastal city wise, during the month of March you are likely to run into very large crowds. Very large crowds of teenagers and college co-eds. And those crowds are likely to be highly, well, rambunctious.

A favorite among college students here in Southern Tennessee is Panama City Beach, FL. While this is a hot-spot during the summer months for the family vacation, those looking to have some quiet, calm, family time during Spring Break may want to avoid PCB during "March Madness," and, no, I'm not talking about basketball. PCB has faired pretty well in the top 3 southeastern SB spots for the past several years and, no doubt, that's not going to change anytime soon. I guarantee you that if I were to ask about a SB destination, over half of my college friends (spanning from UT Knoxville all the way to UT Chattanooga) would shout PCB. Not sure how it came to dubbed the Spring Break Central, but its holding its title steadily.

Also, farther south, Miami and South Beach, FL are big spring break hot spots. While the beaches of Miami tend to stay "hot" year round, the eccentric nightlife brings small town spring breakers here. A slew of clubs and the party scene are guaranteed to keep even the non-spring breaker up all night. Daytona seems to have died off on drawing large crowds like PCB and Miami, but that doesn't mean there still won't be plenty of Spring Break action, and, well, if you don't like the idea of all those spring breaking bodies, then it might be wise to plan out an alternate destination.

Even Florida's neighbors with coasts of their own see a large influx of the Spring Break crowd.

Georgia and Gulf Coast, Mississippi can get pretty crowded and wild. Moving north, Myrtle Beach isn't the quiet vacationing town it normally is. This I can personally attest to. The street gets filled with bumper to bumper "cruisers" and hotel balconies are full of people playing loud music and yelling to the pedestrians on the walkway below. I'm one of those people that love this interaction, but, unfortunately, we went a week too early and had ourselves a nice, quiet Spring Break. Can't complain though, I was far from Cleveland and near the beach.

A couple of calmer destinations for those of you who wish to avoid these sort of Spring Break activities are Fort Lauderdale, FL and Charleston, SC. Fort Lauderdale actually used to be far more popular than PCB now is to our Spring Break crowd. However, several years ago it became known as "Fort Liquordale" and the city decided to clean up its act and take matters into their own hands. Now, they are pretty well known for telling spring Break kids that they aren't welcome. Same goes for Charleston, its a pretty quiet community full of American history. What person in their right mind would want to go there when they're supposed to be taking a break from learning activities?

For those of you who are planning on whipping out all the fun, fabulous party tools, be careful. I love a good time just as much as anyone else out there... and on some occasions don't have room to be giving advice, but the most important thing is making sure you come back to your family and friends that love you. Preferably in one piece!

Have a fantastic time! I'll be sitting here...staring at the Caribbean sunset on my desk top background.
