Live Long - Stay Young

"I've never been one who thought the Lord should make life easy; I've just asked Him to make me strong."
                                                ------  Eva Bowring.

Of all the marvelous advances in medicine, science and technology that have happened in the past century, the ones that have had the most profound impact on our lives are those that increase human life span.

The increase in life-span during this century is due to improved sanitation, the elimination of many childhood diseases through vaccination, and antibiotics.

For many older people, life is visits to the doctor and hospital. In addition, there is arthritis, vision problems, memory  loss, and sleep disorders.

There is a growing population of "old" people who are aging well and who are active and healthy. We see them on tennis courts, in the gym, and sometimes still working.

Researchers all over the world are finding new and exiting ways to maintain health and vitality well into old age.

by B J Armstrong

These are some of the findings to prevent common ailments associated with aging:

- Vitamins and supplements may help to protect the body against the aging process.

- Vitamins may help rejuvenate a "tired" immune system.

- The right combination of herbs will help menopause, memory loss, and prostate problems, just to mention a few aging ailments.

Herbs at a glance and their benefits should spark an interest into the aging process and age related illnesses. Just to name a few:

Black Cohosh - appears to perform as an estrogen substitute to reduce painful menstruation, hot flashes, and mood disorders.

Cayenne - stimulates circulation and may help with headaches.

Echinacea - decreases the frequency of colds and flu. Also helps control urinary tract infections!

Garlic - fights infection and provides help for cardiovascular problems.

Ginger - settles upset stomach following surgery and particularly protective of the lungs and circulatory system.

Ginko - increases blood flow to the brain, protecting against and speeding recovery from stroke; also improves blood flow to the heart, reducing risk of heart attack and clots.

Milk Thistle - helps liver repair itself, aids in recovery of hepatitis, gall bladder disease and alcohol abuse.

Psyllium - treats diarrhea, provides relief from hemorrhoids.

Saw Palmetto - used to relieve painful and irregular urination caused by enlarged prostate.

Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to particular herbs. In cases of serious discomfort or disease, consult a knowledgeable health practitioner. Ask your doctor before attempting any self-treat conditions.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the scientists and physicians who have taken us this far. We have the power and knowledge to change the quality and quantity of our lives. Although the sooner we start the better, positive changes can produce positive results at any stage of our life.

"Withdraw into yourself and look. And if you do not find yourself beautiful yet, act as does the creator of a statue that is to be made beautiful: he cuts away here, he smoothes there, he makes this line lighter, this other purer, until a lovely face has grown upon his work. So do you also: cut away all that is excessive, straighten all that is crooked, bring light to all that is overcast, labor to make all one glow of beauty and never cease chiseling your statue, until there shall shine out on you. From it the godlike splendor of virtue until you see the perfect goodness surely established in the stainless shrine."
                                                              ---- Plotinus, Egyptian-born Roman philosopher (205-270)
