Nasty little secret.

Hardly a day goes by when the clarion call to attract more visitors is not heard from public officials and the tourism people at the Cleveland-Bradley Chamber of Commerce but little is ever said about the rising hotel-motel crime in Cleveland. Cleveland is poised to become a crime zone avoided by tourist if these same people continue to bury their heads in the sand and hope by remaining quiet the problem will disappear. Maybe a little of the tourist funding allocated for wining and dining industrialists and advertising in upscale glossy magazines could be diverted to increase law enforcement in this area. And maybe lax security by hotel management is encouraging the trend. Whatever the reason, a solution needs to be found, fast.

Tax study poop.

You must have heard that a group appointed by Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist, (before he left office in disgrace) to investigate the state's tax system have recommended a state income tax as the solution to falling revenue from the sales tax. That was no surprise. Nor was it a surprise the Tax Study Committee was stacked with pro income tax advocates. Or that they failed to investigate reducing the state's budget to equal falling revenue. The aim to use an official committee to to give the study respectability failed miserably. So why is this editor giving space to a dismal attempt to hoodwink the public? Because it was interesting that Sundquist chose Hal Roe of Cleveland to help con the public into accepting something they know will promote even more runaway state spending and that Roe agreed to be part of the scam. Why did Roe's name crop up, and who recommended him? Are there other pro-income tax advocates lurking beneath the surface of Cleveland's leadership? Are they the people who are continually trying to force tax increases on the people of Bradley County? Roe is a relative newcomer to the community and it is unusual that an outsider should rise to his heights in public and business life (he owns the prosperous Bradley Equipment Rentals) without doing favors and boot licking. What is the secret to his rise to fame and fortune? Who is this man that Sundquist had so much confidence in?

Good choice.

The latest news on Don Sundquist is that he has been chosen to champion fair elections in Ukraine as part of a group of U.S. observers. This, when Tennessee has a record of election fraud equaling any in the world. This, when his appointee, State Election Coordinator Brook Thompson has refused to acknowledge election irregularities in Bradley County, says he does not keep records of complaints and continually enables local Election Director David Ellis to remain free from investigation for violating his own rules of conduct. And this when Thompson appoints people to election commissions that are not knowledgeable enough of the process or the technology to detect fraud. Yes, without Sundquist, Ukraine and Tennessee would not be the places they are today.
