Magnetic Jewelry -
The Healing Power of Magnets

by Alexandra Edwards

In today's modern world, when conventional medicine fails to stop the aches, pains and numerous problems that aging brings, many look for alternative solutions to their problem. Whether it be chiropractic therapy, herbal formulas, vitamin supplements, acupuncture, hypnotism, meditation, yoga or special diets, more people are turning to natural drug-free alternatives, many of which are relatively harmless ancient remedies.

Magnetic therapy is nothing new. In fact, it has been in existence for over 3,000 years, when the Chinese and Egyptians noticed they experienced relief from aching muscles when laying on magnetized rocks after strenuous exercise or work. Legend has it that Cleopatra wore a magnetic amulet on her forehead to preserve her youth.

The idea that a magnetic field can have a  medicinal effect on the human body is still very much with us today as 120 million people worldwide spend over $1.5 billion on the therapeutic benefits of magnets. Some claim the power of magnets can relieve pain and discomfort for those who suffer from ailments as diverse as sinus headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, back or neck pain, inflammation and swelling, arthritis and fibromyalgia. Magnets are also used to boost energy or reduce stress and depression.

Using the correct size and strength magnets for your condition and placing them as close to the affected area as possible is important with magnetic therapy. Ray T. Jacobs, author of Bio Magnetics Manual-Experimental Therapy for the Layman. says, "There is a normal electromagnetic current in all living things, including humans, that is essential for normal cellular function and reproduction. The magnetic current from therapeutic magnetic devices is the same current that occurs naturally in our body." In a comparison, MRI scanners used for diagnostic imaging emit a magnetic field of about 450,000 gauss forced through the body, a medical grade therapeutic magnet is around 3,000 to 14,000 gauss. Jacobs advises that every magnet has a north and south pole. The north pole has calming, soothing, healing and regeneration properties, whereas the south pole has over stimulating and growth properties, so to always treat with the north pole of any high energy magnet.

Products used for magnetic therapy come in all shapes and sizes to fit most areas of the body that require healing. From ornate magnetic jewelry; necklaces, bracelets, rings, toe rings, anklets, ear rings, head bands, and belts, to magnetic shoulder pads, back, ankle and knee pads, elbow and wrist support magnets, magnetic foot insoles, therapy pads and wraps even mattress and pillow pads. Therapeutic grade magnets can be purchased separately and placed inside the pads, also spot magnets are available for direct contact with the skin.

According to the online medical dictionary www.thefreedictionary.com, there are two theories that are used to explain magnetic therapy. One theory maintains that magnets produce a slight electrical current. When magnets are applied to a painful area of the body, the nerves in that area are stimulated, thus releasing the body's natural painkillers. The other theory maintains that when magnets are applied to a painful area of the body, all the cells in that area react to increase blood circulation, ion exchange, and oxygen flow to the area. Magnetic fields attract and repel charged particles in the bloodstream, increasing blood flow and producing heat. Increased oxygen in the tissues and blood stream is thought to make a considerable difference in the speed of healing.

Magnetic jewelry has become more popular over the past few years and today can be found anywhere from specialty stores, department stores, health and fitness stores, flea markets or online. However, be aware that not all magnets are created equal, cheap refrigerator grade magnets are not at all effective. Where possible, have an experienced magnet therapist help you determine which type of magnet is right for your particular ailment.

Magnetic jewelry can be either feminine or masculine. Magnetic hermatite beads can be combined with gold, silver, semi precious stones, lead crystal, filigree, lapis lazuli, cats eye; whatever your taste.

Magnetic therapy is not just for humans, household pets can benefit from it too. Magnetic dog or cat collars and pet pads are also available. Numerous magnets inside the pet beds are placed between two layers of foam and are said to help relieve your pets muscle and joint discomfort, improve circulation, promote deep rejuvenating sleep and accelerate healing.

Enduring pain and discomfort is something we all learn to live with during some time in our lives but if there's a safe, natural way to make it a little easier, then it is certainly well worth trying. For those who are skeptical as to the healing and well-being benefits of magnets, what is there to lose? Should the power of magnets not work for you, at least you have yourself some nice looking jewelry to wear. Try it.
