Mother of local man entangled

in airport escalator

By Pete Edwards

The mother of a local man was injured on an  Atlanta Airport escalator while on a return trip to Sao Paulo, Brazil,  after visiting her son in Cleveland. Ana Choate fell while traveling on an Atlanta International Airport escalator and became entangled in the stairway mechanism.

In a statement to The People News, the son, Edward Choate said he had left his mother at the security check point for her trip back to Brazil and as she was traveling on the up escalator, she fell backwards becoming trapped in the moving parts. Ms. Choate who is seventy-seven years old, screamed for help and someone managed to stop the escalator before she reached the top. Her

right arm, back and leg were damaged in the accident. It was sometime before emergency and medical personnel could reach the scene and free her. She said in a written statement obtained by The People News that before she was treated she was asked to sign a paper, the contents of which she did not understand because she was not wearing her reading glasses and she did not receive a copy. Eventually, she was treated on the scene and elected to continue on the flight home.

The media relations manager for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Felicia Browder, was unable to say what the paper contained or comment on the policy for signing documents by injured passengers. She said she would get back to The People News with the answers but was unable to do so before the deadline. According to Atlanta City records there has been at least two other similar accidents involving an airport escalator but no record of the resulting action could be found.

As of July 27th Ms. Choate was still hospitalized in Brazil where she is receiving treatment for her injuries. Edward Choate said that he didn't think his mother had been treated in a manner that the severity of the injuries deserved and he is concerned for her future health.
