Boring, boring.

Virtually nothing can be more boring than talk of storm water controls but beware, what is boring can sometimes be intrusive and very, very expensive. The so called mandated storm water runoff controls are becoming a burden to Cleveland and Bradley County. Initially, areas in the county were not included in the mandate but once it appeared the City of Cleveland would be left shouldering most of the financial burden, all of a sudden Bradley County was included with a last minute change. Two county commissioners, William (Bill) Varnell and Howard Thompsom wanted the county to be part of the mandate and pushed for more county funding - much hand wringing was in evidence. I have noticed the lack of gumption permeating throughout our leadership. They freak out when the word 'mandate' is mentioned and jump to comply. It must have been like that for some people when the British mandated a stamp tax in 1765, others though, would have none of it. Remember the mandated Basic Education Program (BEP) that cost the Bradley taxpayer an arm and a leg, well some counties refused to play ball. What happened, you say? Well, instead of having their school systems taken over by the state, (as we were told they would by our lily livered leaders) they were given extra funding from the state to comply and kept all their arms and legs. Some of our leaders seem to be severely lacking in courage when it comes to dealing with the feds or the state but have no qualms taking extra from the old folk in their district. This storm water mandate is a crock to increase the size and intrusiveness of government and Varnell and Thompson are leading the charge. By the way, they could both have vested interests in pushing the deal - ask them about it? What is County Mayor, D Gary Davis, doing to protect the taxpayer?  Wringing his hands of course.

Weekly Bashing

Whine, whine, whine. Have you noticed that Susan Shelton, publisher of the Bradley News Weekly, can happily churn out lies and insults against anyone she doesn't like yet confronting her with a few home truths causes her to whine like a baby. And what is all the crying about? I called her the name that strikes fear into the heart of every card carrying lefty - "socialist." Quit ya whining Susie, if you are ashamed of being called a socialist then stop acting like one.

Adopt a vote.

Now I've read it all. The latest dumb idea is for a parent to trade their vote to their child for behaving themselves or doing homework, This wacky idea must have been thought up by the National Education Association or some other brainwashing group. For anyone that doesn't know, it works like this - if little Johnny is a spoiled brat and has no respect for his inept and irresponsible parents, they can bribe him into behaving by letting him choose the next President of the United States. Hey, wait a minute, the wackos could be on to something. Depending on the severity of the misdeed, parents could allow little Johnny to choose local officials too. Pretty soon the whole country would be run by a bunch of cartoon characters and half naked pop singers. Come to think of it, that might be an improvement on what we have.

Just a thought

What's with all the security at the National Democratic Convention.... surely terrorists want those guys to win the election?

Republicrat

County Commissioner Matthew (Matt) Brown has been very vocal of late in opposition to spending taxpayer money. Strange thing is though, he always seems to actually vote to spend more. He is chairman of the county finance committee yet he recommended increased spending of $1.8 million last year and an additional $1.4 million this year. Yeah, he makes a big show of how foolish the county's fiscal policy is but despite the rhetoric has been instigational in increasing the size of government. His latest effort to save the taxpayer money is to recommend the construction of a new airport, even though he knows there is no funding source other than taxes. Personally, I am not against building a new airport and I'm also not against buying a jet for myself to park there, but on both counts it's not going to happen because I don't have the money. Building a new airport is like everything else in life, It's nice to have if you can afford it. My suggestion to Matt Brown is that if he is so concerned to save taxpayer money, he needs to get together with his wealthy friends at the country club and build it themselves.
